Hi Everyone

There was a serious incident at the Cata Hut on the Amathole Hiking Trial on January 2nd.

Four females and a Male were attacked by two balaclava wearing assailants.
Wallets and Cell Phones were stolen and one female was raped.

We have called a meeting with Kieskammahoek SAP, Kieskammahoek CPF and DAFF to find a solution so this never happens again. The meeting will be scheduled for early next week.

However in the interim we have had discussions with Kieskammahoek Station Commander.

Should you have guests or know of anyone who is using or is going to use he Amathole Hiking Trail they are to please contact the SAP of Kieskammahoek. They will let them know the dates that they will be on the trail. The SAP will then make every effort to patrol the area during these times.

Kieskammahoek SAP – 040 658 0262
Station Commander – Lt Col Nika – 082 5513 693

Many thanks for your co operation.

  1. The Border Rural Committee condems the rape and violation of womens rights in the strongest possible terms. BRC and the Cata CPA had since met to discuss the incident. A community meeting was called with the presents of police and department of Forestry owning the huts. The question of crime was seen as a threat to tourism and the community development. the tourists are advised to report to the CPA as well and get guides to protect them from criminal elements. The tourists will be kept informed of any developments and security measures provided.
